Dallas Cowboys Stadium

Although Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas is the current Dallas Cowboys stadium, it wasn't the first facility that the team called home. Starting with their first season in 1960 and for each of the next 10 seasons, the Cowboys called the Cotton Bowl home. The Cotton Bowl, which was built in the 1930s and is located at the Dallas fairgrounds, also hosts the annual college football bowl game the same name and is the current home of F.C. Dallas of Major League Soccer. Texas Stadium was built in 1971 and it has been the team's home ever since. The facility cost an estimated $35 million to build and seats just under 66,000 people. Texas Stadium is also generally recognized as one of the most uniquely designed stadiums in the NFL, as it was originally scheduled to be a domed stadium until funding ran out. Thus, the bulk of the stadium's seats were enclosed, but the playing field remains unsheltered.

Dallas Cowboys Stadium: A New Home on the Horizon

For all of its history and its character, Texas Stadium will soon go the way of the dodo, as voters in Arlington, Texas recently approved a one-half cent sales tax increase to fund the building of a new, $650 million Dallas Cowboys stadium in their city. Located about 20 miles west of Dallas, Arlington is home to more than 330,000 people, making it the seventh largest city in Texas. It is also home to Ameriquest Field, the home of Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers, and a Six Flags theme park, among other attractions. According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the new field, which has yet to be named, will be able to seat 100,000 and will feature a retractable roof. It is schedule to open by 2009, but has recently faced legal challenges over the city's use of eminent domain rights to seize property for the facility's construction.
